Phonics Check

The Phonics Screening Check is a national assessment in England for Year 1 pupils to gauge their phonic decoding skills, identifying those needing extra help with early reading. It involves children reading 40 words, including real words and pseudo-words (nonsense words), to assess their ability to sound out and blend letter combinations. The check helps teachers understand a child's progress and ensure they receive timely support if their phonic decoding isn't at an age-appropriate standard
