This is a summary of how Theydon Bois Primary School delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.

Part A: Curriculum music

Music Overview - TBPS staff have access to this via the Charanga website.

Music Skills Focus and Progression - EYFS - Year 6

  • Music is taught for an hour a week, every half term. Our scheme follows the National Curriculum for music, supported by the Music Model Curriculum  (non-statutory guidance for teaching music from Key Stages 1 to 3).

  • Every child is taught how to play the recorder and the glockenspiel, beginning in year 1 all the way through to year 6.

  • All children make use of a wide range of tuned and untuned instruments within their learning, as well as many opportunities to sing as a group.

  • We work in partnership with Essex Music Hub to support curriculum music, as well as working together with schools in our trust, Epping Forest Partnership Trust.

Part B: Co-curricular music

At Theydon Bois, pupils are able to make progress in music outside of lesson time. They are offered:

  • We offer one to one musical tuition in piano, woodwind and guitar through from year 1 onwards. Lessons are provided by Essex Music Services and local teachers.

  • We use  Rocksteady to provide lessons in singing, keyboard, drums, guitar and bass guitar for all year groups. We offer subsidised lessons for those eligible for pupil premium.

  • Children in Key Stage 2 are invited to join the school choir. There is no charge for the choir.

  • Children in years 5 and 6 are invited to join the Young Voices Choir in the autumn term, leading to a performance at the 02 in London in the spring term.

  • If pupils need/would like to rehearse or practice individually or in groups, this can be arranged (with prior notice) with the music lead/HT

  • Working in partnership with Essex Music Services, we direct parents and carers towards their opportunities including instrument loans, weekend, after-school or holiday provision such as Epping Music School, and any qualifications or awards pupils can achieve.

Part C: Musical experiences/Events/Performances

At Theydon Bois, we recognise the value and importance of musical experiences and a creative curriculum. These opportunities are planned across the year.

  • African drumming workshop/performance.

  • ‘Rock Steady’ demonstration assemblies.

  • Weekly singing assembly.

  • Instrumental performances as part of the weekly singing assembly.

  • Choir singing at local care homes/Theydon Bois ‘Community Cuppa’.

  • Choir Christmas performance at St.John’s Church as part of the MAT.

  • School Christmas carol concert.

  • Bi-annual PTA music event, in association with local musical groups.

  • Annual summer concert.

Future development

At Theydon Bois we are aiming for all key stage 2 children to enhance their composition skills through music technology. In 2025/26 we will be trialing the Yu Studio programme from Essex Music Services.

In 2025/2026 we are looking to broaden our offer of instrumental tuition.
