Statement of Intent for PE at Theydon Bois Primary School
At Theydon Bois Primary School, we are committed to providing a high-quality PE curriculum that supports the physical, emotional, and social development of every child. Through sport, we aim to instill values such as teamwork, resilience, and a sense of achievement, while fostering a lifelong love of physical activity. Our PE curriculum is designed to be inclusive, engaging, and progressive, offering all pupils the opportunity to participate in a broad range of physical activities and competitive events, preparing them for a healthy and active lifestyle both now and in the future.
Curriculum Intent:
Our PE and sport provision is underpinned by the National Curriculum and guided by the government’s PE and Sport Premium funding objectives. We aim to ensure that every pupil:
- Develops competence and excels in a wide variety of physical activities.
- Engages in physical activity for sustained periods, working towards the target of 30 minutes of physical activity per day (excluding playtime).
- Participates in competitive sports and activities, both within and beyond the school.
- Leads a healthy, active lifestyle by acquiring the skills to make informed choices about physical activity.
- Swims 25m competently, confidently, and proficiently, using a range of strokes effectively and performing safe self-rescue.
Key Areas of Focus:
- Engagement in Physical Activity: We are committed to ensuring that all pupils engage in physical activity, striving for a target of 30 minutes a day. By offering a variety of sports and activities, we encourage all children to take part in and enjoy physical activity, both in school and beyond.
- Raising the Profile of PE and Sport: We aim to raise the profile of PE and sport throughout the school. By celebrating achievements, creating opportunities for all children to participate, and showcasing the benefits of sport, we seek to inspire children to become physically active and develop a passion for sports.
- Broad and Diverse Sports Provision: Our curriculum offers a wide range of sports and physical activities, ensuring that children experience both traditional and non-traditional sports. From gymnastics to athletics, cross-country to swimming, and even cheerleading and triathlons, we provide opportunities for every child to try something new and develop their physical skills.
- Competitive Sport Participation: We actively encourage and support children’s participation in competitive sports, with regular events at the school, regional, county and national levels. From swimming galas to cross-country championships and athletics competitions, we give children the opportunity to challenge themselves and strive for excellence.
- Swimming Excellence: Swimming is an integral part of our PE curriculum, with a focus on ensuring that every child can swim 25m confidently and safely. Through the use of our school’s swimming pool and expert teaching, we provide high-quality swimming lessons that equip children with life-saving water safety skills.
Implementation:
Our PE curriculum is implemented through a combination of lessons, extra-curricular clubs, and competitive events. Key strategies include:
- CPD Opportunities for Staff: We invest in ongoing professional development for our teaching staff to ensure that they have the skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality PE lessons. This includes training through the West Essex School Sports Partnership (WESSP) and subject leadership courses.
- Collaboration and Partnerships: We work closely with local schools and sports clubs to provide a broad range of opportunities for our pupils. This collaboration offers pupils access to a variety of competitive events, sports festivals, and inter-school matches.
- Engagement in Daily Physical Activity: Every child is encouraged to engage in daily physical activity, including the Daily Mile and other fitness-based activities.
- Inclusive Sports Events: All pupils from Reception to Year 6 are given the opportunity to participate in sports events throughout the year, ensuring that every child can be involved, regardless of ability.
Assessment:
We assess children’s learning in PE through:
- Teacher Observations: Regular observations of children’s participation, effort, and development during lessons.
- Event Participation: Monitoring pupils’ involvement and performance in competitive sports events.
- Knowledge Quizzes: These are used to assess pupils’ understanding of key concepts such as rules, techniques, and the benefits of physical activity.
- Pupil Voice: A random selection of pupils are chosen to participate in a group question and answer session to understand their knowledge and understanding of the subject.
Impact:
Through our PE and sport provision, we aim to:
- Foster a Love of Physical Activity: We want children to enjoy being active and develop a lifelong interest in physical activity and sport.
- Develop Competence and Confidence: We aim for pupils to become skilled and confident in a range of physical activities, enabling them to excel and take part in competitive sports.
- Promote Healthy, Active Lifestyles: We strive to instill habits that will encourage children to lead active, healthy lives both during their time at school and beyond.
- Achieve Excellence in Swimming and Physical Activity: We want every child to achieve the milestone of swimming 25m competently and to have the skills needed for safe, active participation in sport.
This Statement of Intent will be reviewed regularly to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of our pupils and reflects best practice in the provision of PE and sport. Through our continued efforts, we hope to inspire the children of Theydon Bois Primary School to enjoy a broad range of physical activities and develop a passion for sport that will last a lifetime.
Knowledge Organisers
Theydon Bois Primary has created its own Knowledge Organisers to support with memory skills, in order to retain key facts and support with learning. There is lots of educational research into memory, indicating that our working memory capacity is limited (cognitive load theory), so by storing more in our long-term memory, we can free up our working memory capacity (Paas et al, 2004), which will support our day to day learning.
We created these Knowledge Organisers to aid the retention of key knowledge, vocabulary and skills taught within topics; to encourage that pupils then actively use this knowledge, vocabulary and these skills wherever possible. Our goal is that these Knowledge Organisers will be introduced at the start of each topic within our half termly themes. They provide key information that we expect all children to be able to discuss and expand upon by the end of the topic.
They provide parents with an insight into what our pupils will be learning over the half term. The individual Knowledge Organisers will also be used regularly within lessons and recapped at the end of the topic or theme, highlighting to the pupils how much they have learnt.
The Knowledge Organisers also provide a starting point for parents who wish to challenge their children further. We actively encourage parents to investigate and research the topic in greater depth or to reinforce at home, what the pupils are doing in the classroom. Our Knowledge Organisers have been created for most topics we cover within a curriculum subject. They will be added to as we go through the year. They will be actively used in lessons and referred to regularly, reinforcing key vocabulary throughout the topic.
