SEND in Practice

Our Inclusive School

Our school is an inclusive school and endeavours to meet the needs of all pupils and their families, including those with special educational needs. We have a shared expectation that all pupils, regardless of their needs, should be offered inclusive teaching which will enable them to make the best possible progress in school so they are a valued member of the school community. The range of support the school can offer will be tailored to individual need following thorough assessments by internal and / or external agencies.

Supporting pupils with Special Educational Needs

Adaptive Teaching

High quality teaching is our first step in responding to pupils who have SEN. This will be differentiated for individual pupils.

Some pupils are supported in class for part of the school day by a LSA, either individually or in a small group. These pupils continue to have the same opportunities as their peers for learning in a group with the class teacher.

We make the following adaptations to ensure all pupils’ needs are met:

- Differentiating our curriculum to ensure all pupils are able to access it, for example, by grouping, 1:1 work, teaching style, content of the lesson, etc.

- Adapting our resources and staffing, using recommended aids, such as laptops, coloured overlays, visual timetables, larger font, etc.

- Differentiating our teaching, for example, giving longer processing times, pre- teaching of key vocabulary, reading instructions aloud, etc.

Intervention:

The SENCO ensures that the school provides a range of intervention programmes to address the needs of groups of pupils and individual pupils within the school.

Interventions available include:

  • Phonics
  • Bucket Time and Attention Autism
  • Curiosity Approach
  • Typing/Computer Skills
  • Sensory circuits
  • Sensory stories,
  • Gym Trail/fine motor and handwriting

  • Lego Therapy
  • Colourful Semantics

  • Socially Speaking

Small group reading, writing, spelling and maths groups are run throughout the school to further support the needs of pupils with SEND, particularly those who are on additional support plans.

Speech, language and communication support

  • At Theydon Bois Primary School our team of highly skilled staff support children with a range of speech, language and communication needs including; speech sound production, vocabulary building and language skills through intervention with Mrs Harris (BSc Hons Speech and Language in Early Years and BA Hons in EYFS) and Mrs Collins (Speech and Language LSA).

  • Through assessment we can identify children’s speech and language needs and then target specific speech sounds through 1:1 and small group intervention. To help elicit their target sounds the children  play games and take part in  multi-sensory activities that give lots of trials. They will progress their target sound from the sound in isolation, through word and then sentence level.

  • To support children’s language development, we have a range of interventions to target specific areas of need. Again the children may be supported on a 1:1 or small group level. These interventions include, but are not limited to, Language for Thinking, PORIC, Bucket Time, Sensory Stories, Curiosity Approach, Welcomm,
Key Stage 1 Talk Boost, Lego Therapy, Colourful Semantics, Memory Magic, Auditory memory and Blanks.

Social, emotional and mental health support

ELSA and Wellbeing Mentor

  • At Theydon Bois Primary School Miss Ward is our Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) and Wellbeing Mentor. She is a specialist teaching assistant with a wealth of experience.  Miss Ward provides support to children individually or sometimes in small groups covering issues such as: loss and bereavement, anxiety, self esteem and managing strong emotions. The aim of our ELSA and Wellbeing Mentor work is to build our pupils’ emotional development and improve their resilience enabling them to cope with challenges..
  • Miss Ward attended Psychologist led training and has regular, ongoing supervision with our MAT Educational Psychologist.
  • Children are referred to Miss Ward by their class teacher, SENCO or Headteacher and children are offered 6-12 weeks of support.  The ELSA sessions are carefully planned and are target driven according to the needs of individual pupils.

 Reading with Rafi

We are thrilled to be working with the charity: Pets As Therapy using their Read2Dogs scheme.  Rafi joins school staff and individual pupils, accompanied by his owner Caroline, for an hour each week.

Dogs provide comfort, encourage positive social behaviours and enhance self-esteem.   The Read2Dogs scheme has been proven to help children gain confidence in reading.

The scheme can also help young people to improve their literacy skills and encourage confidence and concentration. Reading a story aloud to a PAT Dog, a great non-judgemental listener, helps young people to enjoy the reading experience; inspiring pupils to read more at home and motivating speech by telling Rafi all about the story the following week.

 Sensory Room

The primary aims of the Rainbow Room are to:

  • Provide a safe, quiet, and predictable space where pupils can go to self-regulate and manage sensory input.

  • Support pupils in developing self-regulation strategies to cope with feelings of anxiety, over-stimulation, or distress.

  • Enhance attention and focus, enabling pupils to return to the classroom ready to learn.

  • Support therapeutic and educational interventions delivered by staff or external professionals.

  • Promote emotional well-being and reduce behavioral challenges linked to sensory processing difficulties.

  • Ensure the welfare and safety of all pupils using the room, in line with statutory safeguarding guidance.
